Horst Bredekamp has been Professor of History of Art at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 1993 and has been a Permanent Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study since 2003.  In 2000, he founded the project »The technical picture« at the Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik (Hermann von Helmholtz-Centre for the Study of Cultural Competencies) (HZK), which under his leadership seeks to develop visually critical methods, a theory of pictorial knowledge in the fields of science and technology and medical visualizations. Since 2008, Bredekamp has directed the DFG-Kolleg (German Research Foundation) research training group) »Picture Act and Embodiment«.

 

Research fields

Romanesque art, early modern art, iconoclasm, history of scientific illustration, art and techniques,history of the  »Kunstkammer« , new media, the  »Picture Act«.
